JJ Shorty New Standard
JJ Shorty New Standard
Following an upgrade in equipment and a lot of experience making the JJ Shorty I have now made a new standard version. The JJ Shorty pairs perfectly with a JJ Shorty strop, which is hand made in Scotland and uses British vegetal leather. The strops are zero profit to ensure new shavers have the best possible start. “Boaby G’s Unique Strops” are available through this website if you wish to upgrade to a full size strop in the future.
The JJ Shorty New standard is officially the training razor for Cella master barbers. It was chosen by the master barber instructor due to the ease of use, design, quality of the edge and edge retention. A skilled barber is able to get five full shaves before the need to strop.
The JJ Shorty starts life as a 6/8 extra hollow razor blank made from high carbon steel. The three inch cutting edge is reduced to two inches by removing half an inch from the toe and half an inch from the heel. This is done for several reasons, firstly the reduced cutting edge is less intimidating, much easier to use and great for manoeuvring around facial hair. Secondly the section removed from the heel gives more space for fingers on the tang, this allows a comfortable grip far easier than a standard straight. The removed heel maintains a neutral balance around the point where the thumb is positioned in the grip.
The new standard is improved further by having polished faces, this isn’t a mirror polish, but it is an improvement over the previous standard, it may evolve into a mirror finish in time. The junction between the tang and blade has been worked on to smooth the transition and improve the finish of the razor. The jimps have also been removed of the previous version, this is to improve the overall appearance of the razor, giving it smooth lines throughout. As the jimps have been removed a small thumbwell has been added as a reference point for grip.
The edge is still the full Japanese ceramic synthetic stones, for consultancy and finished with a nakayama Japanese natural stone, with one nagura stage (Mejiro), this has proven to be a very forgiving edge that’s extremely efficient. When the razor comes back to be honed again I can go further and make the edge less forgiving, thus sharper; but remember the users technique makes more difference to the shave than the honing of the razor. Experience straight shavers and barbers have always complimented my edge, so I can confidently say that the edge is a great match for the razor.
The razor is available in two profiles, round toe (more forgiving) and barbers notch (allows a place for a finger if required and a window to line up facial hair). Scales are available in a variety of acrylic colours, including metallic finishes and five layer pearlescent (metallic and pearlescent at an extra cost) on request. I have a ever changing selection of hardwoods (available at an extra cost) that are sourced from guitar makers, building restoration and vintage furniture dealers (a broken table leg, for example, can be cut into blanks required for the scales), if this appeals to you please contact me for the options.
Buying a JJ Shorty unlocks my full support via email, private messenger, my website chat and YouTube. I also offer free hones for three months from date of purchase, you are only required to pay the postage both ways.
